Risk Management Awareness

A practical introduction for every worker: how to spot a hazard, think the risk through, and stop or speak up before the job starts.

About this package

Most workers have signed a risk assessment they did not write. This session explains what it is for: finding the hazards in the job, thinking about what could go wrong and how badly, and putting controls in place before work starts rather than after something has gone wrong.

Participants learn the difference between a hazard and a risk, how the hierarchy of control ranks controls from removing the hazard down to PPE, how to do a quick task risk assessment at the workface, and when and how to stop a job and raise a concern. The language matches what their supervisors and managers learn in the rest of the series.

Learning outcomes

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the difference between a hazard, a risk and an incident
  • Recognise common hazards in their own work, including the ones that have come to seem normal
  • Describe how likelihood and consequence combine to give a level of risk, and why likelihood depends on the controls in place
  • Rank controls using the hierarchy of control, and explain why PPE comes last
  • Complete a simple task risk assessment before starting a job
  • Describe how workers are consulted about risk, and how to take part
  • Stop a job, and raise a hazard, concern or near miss early through the right channel

Questions about this package

Does this replace our site induction?

No. It teaches the general method of identifying hazards and controlling risk. Your site's own hazards, rules and procedures still belong in your induction, and the facilitator guide shows where to add them to the session.

Can supervisors deliver it?

Yes. It is designed for an internal facilitator such as a supervisor, WHS adviser or leading hand, using the facilitator guide.

Can we edit the documents?

Yes. Presentations, guides, workbooks and templates are supplied in editable formats so you can adapt them to your workplace. The copyright notice must stay.

Can we use the packages outside Australia?

Yes. The method applies in any workplace and follows the same principles as ISO 31000 (risk management) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety management systems). The legal content refers to Australian work health and safety (WHS and OHS) laws, so a business elsewhere should replace those slides with its own country's requirements. The materials are editable for exactly that.

Do participants get a certificate?

Yes. The package includes an editable completion certificate template, plus an attendance register or training records spreadsheet, so you can keep proof of who completed the training for your WHS records. It is a certificate of completion issued by your business, not a nationally recognised qualification.

Can we deliver it face to face and online?

Yes. The packages are designed for face-to-face sessions and work over a video meeting platform. The facilitator guide notes where an activity needs adjusting for online delivery.

Can we run it more than once?

Yes, as many times as you like, for your own organisation's workers.

What is your refund policy?

Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law are not affected. See the Refund Policy for how we handle a package that is faulty, not as described, or not what you ordered.

Do we get future updates?

You keep the version you bought for as long as you use it, and corrections to that version are made available to you. A new edition, for example following a significant change in the law, may be sold separately.
