About this package

Supervisors decide more about risk than any procedure does. They plan the job, allocate the people and equipment, sign off the risk assessment and decide whether work carries on when conditions change. This package builds risk management into that everyday work.

Leaders learn to run a task risk assessment their crew actually contributes to, to choose controls from the top of the hierarchy, to check at the workface that controls are in place, to manage the risks that come with change, and to escalate what they cannot control. Realistic supervisory scenarios run through the whole session.

Learning outcomes

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the WHS or OHS duties that apply to their role, and how they differ from an officer's
  • Explain what 'so far as reasonably practicable' means when choosing controls
  • Lead a task risk assessment with their crew that reflects the work as done
  • Review a risk assessment and recognise one that would not have prevented an incident
  • Select controls from the top of the hierarchy, and justify a lower-order control when they must use one
  • Check at the workface that controls are in place and being used
  • Consult their team in a way that changes the plan when it should
  • Recognise when a change to people, plant, process or conditions needs a fresh look at the risk
  • Escalate a risk they cannot control, in writing, with facts and options
  • Respond to a reported hazard or near miss so that people keep reporting
  • Keep their team's risk register entries current, with a named owner for each control

  • The workface check: a paired practice in checking whether controls are in place and used, without turning it into an audit
  • Supervisory scenarios: a changed shutdown scope in manufacturing, a traffic management plan that no longer fits a council roadworks site, a new subcontractor crew on a construction site and a changed delivery route in transport, worked through step by step
  • Team risk register: each leader lists the main risks in a team they actually lead, names the controls and their owners, and chooses two things to start with

Questions about this package

Do participants need to have done the Awareness package first?

It helps but is not required. The Leadership package covers hazards, risk and the hierarchy of control from the start.

Can we use our own risk assessment forms?

Yes. The activities work with any task risk assessment format, and the facilitator guide explains how to swap in your own forms and scenarios without losing the learning points.

Can we edit the documents?

Yes. Presentations, guides, workbooks and templates are supplied in editable formats so you can adapt them to your workplace. The copyright notice must stay.

Can we use the packages outside Australia?

Yes. The method applies in any workplace and follows the same principles as ISO 31000 (risk management) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety management systems). The legal content refers to Australian work health and safety (WHS and OHS) laws, so a business elsewhere should replace those slides with its own country's requirements. The materials are editable for exactly that.

Do participants get a certificate?

Yes. The package includes an editable completion certificate template, plus an attendance register or training records spreadsheet, so you can keep proof of who completed the training for your WHS records. It is a certificate of completion issued by your business, not a nationally recognised qualification.

Can we deliver it face to face and online?

Yes. The packages are designed for face-to-face sessions and work over a video meeting platform. The facilitator guide notes where an activity needs adjusting for online delivery.

Can we run it more than once?

Yes, as many times as you like, for your own organisation's workers.

What is your refund policy?

Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law are not affected. See the Refund Policy for how we handle a package that is faulty, not as described, or not what you ordered.

Do we get future updates?

You keep the version you bought for as long as you use it, and corrections to that version are made available to you. A new edition, for example following a significant change in the law, may be sold separately.
