Critical Control Management Awareness

For every worker on a site with fatal risks: what a critical control is, how to check it is there, and what to do when it is not.

About this package

Most fatal incidents happen when one of a small number of controls was missing or did not work: an isolation not proved dead, an exclusion zone not kept, a seatbelt not worn, a guard taken off. This session gives every worker the language and the habits to notice that before the job starts.

Participants learn what makes a risk critical, what a critical control is and how it differs from the other controls around it, how to check the critical controls for their task, and why a missing critical control means the job stops. The language matches what supervisors, control owners and managers learn in the rest of the series.

Learning outcomes

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain what makes a risk critical: the potential to kill or permanently disable
  • Recognise the critical risks in their own work
  • Explain what a critical control is, and how it differs from other controls
  • Read a simple bowtie: the event, what causes it, and what limits the consequences
  • Check the critical controls for their task before starting, using a critical control checklist
  • Stop work when a critical control is missing or not working
  • Report a critical control failure or near miss through the right channel

Questions about this package

Do we need a critical control program in place first?

No. The session works on its own, with examples for common critical risks. If you already have critical controls and checklists, the facilitator guide shows where to swap in your own.

Can supervisors deliver it?

Yes. It is designed for an internal facilitator such as a supervisor, WHS adviser or leading hand, using the facilitator guide.

Can we edit the documents?

Yes. Presentations, guides, workbooks and templates are supplied in editable formats so you can adapt them to your workplace. The copyright notice must stay.

Can we use the packages outside Australia?

Yes. The method applies in any workplace and follows the same principles as ISO 31000 (risk management) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety management systems). The legal content refers to Australian work health and safety (WHS and OHS) laws, so a business elsewhere should replace those slides with its own country's requirements. The materials are editable for exactly that.

Do participants get a certificate?

Yes. The package includes an editable completion certificate template, plus an attendance register or training records spreadsheet, so you can keep proof of who completed the training for your WHS records. It is a certificate of completion issued by your business, not a nationally recognised qualification.

Can we deliver it face to face and online?

Yes. The packages are designed for face-to-face sessions and work over a video meeting platform. The facilitator guide notes where an activity needs adjusting for online delivery.

Can we run it more than once?

Yes, as many times as you like, for your own organisation's workers.

What is your refund policy?

Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law are not affected. See the Refund Policy for how we handle a package that is faulty, not as described, or not what you ordered.

Do we get future updates?

You keep the version you bought for as long as you use it, and corrections to that version are made available to you. A new edition, for example following a significant change in the law, may be sold separately.
