About this package

Critical controls fail at the workface, on an ordinary day, under ordinary pressure: a shortcut on an isolation, an exclusion zone that slowly shrinks, a gas test done once and assumed to hold all shift. Supervisors are best placed to see that happening, and are the first who must act on it.

Leaders learn how critical controls are chosen and what their performance standards require, how to carry out a field verification that tests whether a control is working rather than whether a form is filled in, how to respond when a control is missing or has failed, and how to report what they find so that it is acted on. Realistic field scenarios run through the whole session.

Learning outcomes

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the WHS or OHS duties that apply to their role, and how they differ from an officer's
  • Explain how critical risks and critical controls are identified using bowtie analysis
  • Read a critical control performance standard and say what 'working' means for that control
  • Carry out a field verification that tests the control in use, not just the paperwork
  • Tell a critical control verification from an inspection or an audit
  • Recognise how critical controls erode over time, and the conditions that speed it up
  • Respond to a missing or failed critical control: stop, make safe, report, fix
  • Talk with a crew about critical controls in a way that brings problems forward
  • Escalate a control that cannot be restored, in writing, with facts and options
  • Record verification results honestly, including the uncomfortable ones
  • Use verification results to decide where to look next

Practical activities

  • Read the standard: leaders work out from a performance standard what they would need to see to know that a vehicle and pedestrian separation control is working
  • Observe, ask, test: a paired practice in verifying a control in use with the crew, without turning it into an audit
  • Field scenarios: an isolation on a processing plant conveyor at a mine, an exclusion zone under a crane lift on a construction site, traffic management for council roadworks and a gas test before confined space entry at a water treatment plant, worked through from verification to response
  • Verification schedule: each leader plans verifications for the critical controls in an area they actually supervise, and chooses two things to start with

Questions about this package

Do participants need to have done the Awareness package first?

It helps but is not required. The Leadership package introduces critical risks, critical controls and bowties from the start.

Can we use our own bowties and performance standards?

Yes. The scenarios and worksheets are editable, and the facilitator guide explains how to run the activities on your own critical controls, which is usually the most useful way to deliver it.

Can we edit the documents?

Yes. Presentations, guides, workbooks and templates are supplied in editable formats so you can adapt them to your workplace. The copyright notice must stay.

Can we use the packages outside Australia?

Yes. The method applies in any workplace and follows the same principles as ISO 31000 (risk management) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety management systems). The legal content refers to Australian work health and safety (WHS and OHS) laws, so a business elsewhere should replace those slides with its own country's requirements. The materials are editable for exactly that.

Do participants get a certificate?

Yes. The package includes an editable completion certificate template, plus an attendance register or training records spreadsheet, so you can keep proof of who completed the training for your WHS records. It is a certificate of completion issued by your business, not a nationally recognised qualification.

Can we deliver it face to face and online?

Yes. The packages are designed for face-to-face sessions and work over a video meeting platform. The facilitator guide notes where an activity needs adjusting for online delivery.

Can we run it more than once?

Yes, as many times as you like, for your own organisation's workers.

What is your refund policy?

Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law are not affected. See the Refund Policy for how we handle a package that is faulty, not as described, or not what you ordered.

Do we get future updates?

You keep the version you bought for as long as you use it, and corrections to that version are made available to you. A new edition, for example following a significant change in the law, may be sold separately.
