About this package

A business with fatal risks can report no lost time injuries for years while the controls that stand between its people and a fatality slowly erode. Owners, directors and senior managers decide whether critical control management is resourced and taken seriously, and are the ones asked afterwards what they knew.

This briefing covers what critical control management is and is not, what the board should receive about critical controls, why injury rates say little about fatal risk, how to read verification results, and how to respond to a significant control failure. Officer duties are covered accurately for each jurisdiction, including Victoria, where the law takes a different form.

Learning outcomes

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the governance responsibilities for critical risks, and how officer duties differ between jurisdictions
  • Explain why injury frequency rates do not measure fatal risk
  • Interpret critical control verification reporting critically, and recognise results that are too green to be true
  • Tell an isolated control failure from a systemic one, and know which needs the board
  • Recognise and respond to a significant critical control failure
  • Resource critical control management deliberately, knowing what doing it properly takes
  • Set clear accountability for critical risks and controls, and ask 'how do you know?'

Questions about this package

Is this suitable for a small business owner?

Yes, where the business has risks that could kill. It works as a briefing for an owner and their managers, a small leadership team or a board, in under two hours, and stands on its own.

Does it cover Victoria?

Yes. Victoria's OHS Act takes a different form from the harmonised WHS laws, including how officers can be liable, and the briefing explains the difference rather than assuming one model.

Can we edit the documents?

Yes. Presentations, guides, workbooks and templates are supplied in editable formats so you can adapt them to your workplace. The copyright notice must stay.

Can we use the packages outside Australia?

Yes. The method applies in any workplace and follows the same principles as ISO 31000 (risk management) and ISO 45001 (occupational health and safety management systems). The legal content refers to Australian work health and safety (WHS and OHS) laws, so a business elsewhere should replace those slides with its own country's requirements. The materials are editable for exactly that.

Do participants get a certificate?

Yes. The package includes an editable completion certificate template, plus an attendance register or training records spreadsheet, so you can keep proof of who completed the training for your WHS records. It is a certificate of completion issued by your business, not a nationally recognised qualification.

Can we deliver it face to face and online?

Yes. The packages are designed for face-to-face sessions and work over a video meeting platform. The facilitator guide notes where an activity needs adjusting for online delivery.

Can we run it more than once?

Yes, as many times as you like, for your own organisation's workers.

What is your refund policy?

Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law are not affected. See the Refund Policy for how we handle a package that is faulty, not as described, or not what you ordered.

Do we get future updates?

You keep the version you bought for as long as you use it, and corrections to that version are made available to you. A new edition, for example following a significant change in the law, may be sold separately.
